Hubert Klumpner (1965, Salzburg Aurstria) studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, and received his masters in Architecture and Urban Design as a Fulbright grantee at Columbia University. Since May 2010, Klumpner has held the chair for Architecture and Urban Design at the Swiss Institute of Technology (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, ETH) in Zürich, Switzerland. Work at ETH centers on contmepoary architecture and urbanism practice, with research focusing on informal settlements in the global south. The members of the ETH team are specialized in conducting research and fieldwork in different urban slum areas around the globe (India, Jordan, Palestine, Venezuela, and most intensively in Brazil).
In 1998 Klumpner joined Alfredo Brillembourg as Director of Urban-Think Tank (U-TT) in Caracas. Along with Alfredo Brillembourg, he received the 2010 Ralph Erskine Award, 2011 Gold Holcim Award for Latin America and 2012 Silver Holcim Global Award for their innovation in social and ecological urban design. Work on “Torre David Gran Horizonte” received the Golden award at the 13th international architecture exhibition in Venice.
Klumpner is a consultant to the International Program for Social and Cultural Development in Latin America, UNESCO-OEA-BID, and sits on the board of directors of Consorcio Justicia, a social development advocacy group that promotes democratization of the Venezuelan justice system and continues to lecture at schools andintitutions throughout the world.
